In most organizations information processing is divided into two basic environments – the formal environment and the informal environment. In the formal environment are found transaction processing systems, reports, and analytical processing. In the informal systems are found text, emails, reports, corporate contracts, blogs, and so forth.

For a variety of reasons, formal and informal systems are as far apart as night and day. Even though people use both systems, it is as if there were a magical gulf between the two environments.

It is of interest that the total volume of data found in the unstructured, informal world is estimated to be 4 to 5 times larger than the volume of data found in the structured. Yet it is in the formal, structured world where the data lies on which decisions are made. For a variety of reasons the vast majority of corporate decisions are made based on structured data, not unstructured data.
